Project Type

This installation was part of a 7 month major extension project to a 1930s semi-detached house to create a large open plan Kitchen/diner and living area

  • Product: WUNDA Rapid Response®
  • Area: Whole ground floor including – Open plan Kitchen Diner and family space, playroom, living room, utility room, hallway.
  • Days: 4-5 Days

A perfect time to fit WUNDA Rapid Response® heating is when renovating or extending as typically the flooring is replaced at the same time.

So, whilst the floorboards or concrete subfloor are exposed fitting can be incorporated as part of the project with trade persons on-site and very little impact to the schedule.

Install Process

Wunda Rapid Response Overfloor® was recommended to the home owner by the heating engineer who had already installed it for a previous customer. It was scheduled in to the extension build first fix taking 5 days to install from start to fully commissioned and working.

Rather than installing a screed system in the new area of the home and retrofitting Rapid Response® in the existing areas, Wunda recommended fitting Rapid Response® throughout the ground floor. Ensuring consistent controllability.

This was done by screeding up to the height of the existing space in the extension. Providing a level subfloor throughout the new and old spaces to lay the Rapid Response® underfloor heating system.

Firstly the manifold was assembled and fixed to an interior garage wall as specified by the Wunda design team.

Using the layout plan provided by Wunda the boards were first ‘dry laid’ and cut as required to ensure the plan matched the floor layout.  The 22ltr Wunda Spray adhesive canister and lance were used to fix the boards to both the concrete and wooden sub-floors.

Following the pipe layout plan, the pipe was run into the channels on the boards to create the required loops for the zones to be heated.

Once the system was pressure tested, the panels were primed and then tiled onto directly.

Heat-up times are fast because the warm water pipes are just beneath the final floor finish.

Final Floor Finish

As the extension had a concrete slab sub-floor and the rest of the ground floor of the house house had floor boards, WUNDA Rapid Response Overfloor® was an ideal solution

Large tiles throughout the open plan kitchen diner were fixed directly to the rapid response overfloor boards using the approved primer and adhesives.

“It’s very important to use the approved primer and adhesives as they have been tried and tested and are part of the Wunda guarantee. PDF fact sheets can be downloaded from the wundagroup website which give full details regarding installation and approved products. With the warm water pipes just beneath the tiles it is warm under foot within minutes.

Vinyl wood effect flooring was fitted in the living room and hallway. A thin layer of the recommended self levelling screed was used to create the necessary flat surface.
