Underfloor Heating for Carpet

Carpet and Rugs with Underfloor Heating

Carpets and rugs can be used with underfloor heating. But it is important to remember that as they are usually insulators, there are some limitations to the type of carpet or rug you choose. A floor finish that is an insulator will resist the rising heat and could stop it from coming through the floor into your room.

It’s always best to check with your supplier if their product is suitable for use with underfloor heating, but if you have any carpet related underfloor heating questions then feel free to get in touch. It is advised that 2.5 is the max combined tog rating of the carpet, underlay and any intermediate layers, for reference Persian rugs are often 1.9 tog.

Installing Underfloor Heating with Carpet Flooring

There are two methods of installation when using the Wunda Rapid Response® system with carpet as your floor finish.

The first,  is to use 5-10 mm of approved self levelling compound on top of the pipes and panels and then lay the carpet on top.

The approved compounds are:

  • ‘Ultra level IT 2’, when primed using ‘Ultra prime it multi surface primer’.
  • ‘Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed’ when primed with ‘Mapei Eco Prim Grip’

While the levelling compound or primer is not provided by Wunda, it can be sourced from local merchants or online.

The second, is using Wunda’s Duo boards.

The duo board is placed on top of the Rapid Response® panels and then the carpet is laid on top of the duo board. Note that the duo boards will add 0.5 Tog of thermal resistance and 7mm to the profile height.

The duo boards can be priced by your project manager in addition to your chosen underfloor heating system.

To allow for gripper rods to be fitted, it is recommended to install a 16/20mm batten around the perimeter of the room to allow the grippers to be screwed or nailed down.

Please call in to confirm your floor finish with your Wunda Project Manager and also consult your floor finish provider.

Underfloor Heating Energy Efficiency

Radiator systems are the 20th century equivalent of a fireplace. They need your boiler or heat pump to supply  hot water temperatures (60-80 degrees) so that they can emit heat into the room.

Water based Underfloor heating works differently, it is like having a huge radiator spread out beneath your floor. Underfloor heating can cover the entire floor space allowing it to use much lower water temperatures (35-45 degrees) to transmit heat throughout the room, making it the go to energy efficient and sustainable system of choice.
